In this captivating study by Chris Lee, a single butterfly species—Mimathyma shrenckii—is presented in a paired display to reveal both its dorsal and ventral sides. The upper specimen shows off the dark, dramatic tones of the upperside: a rich blackish brown with bold white patches that slash across the wings like calligraphy.
Beneath it, the ventral side of the same species takes on an entirely different character—powdery blue-gray with intricate rust and black patterning near the margins. The contrast is unexpected and mesmerizing, inviting the viewer to pause and consider the complexity of nature’s design.
This arrangement serves as both an aesthetic display and a scientific illustration, highlighting the remarkable transformation in coloration between the top and underside of a single butterfly.
