This artwork features the incredible Kallima inachus, commonly known as the Indian Leafwing, in a display of perfect natural deception. The butterfly's wings, closed and still, resemble a dry, crumpled leaf, complete with “veins” and a midrib. Chris Lee pairs this natural illusion with a striking hexagonal background in shades of moss green, slate blue, and gold — an elegant contrast that draws out the hidden brilliance of the butterfly’s mimicry.
The Indian Leafwing is famous for its leaf-like underside, evolved as a defense mechanism. When its wings are closed, predators often overlook it entirely. Only when it takes flight are its vivid orange and blue upper wings revealed.
