In Dual Flame, Chris Lee contrasts two vibrant forms of the same species, Cethosia biblis, commonly known as the Leopard Lacewing. These butterflies are a celebration of natural variation: the top specimen blazes with a bold orange hue bordered in black and dotted with white, while the lower one shows off its intricately patterned underside — a riot of warm earth tones, lace-like details, and subtle purples and ochres.
Mounted on a bright white background, the two butterflies hover in delicate opposition — one fiery and frontal, the other intricately complex and softly muted. Together they explore duality: day and night, exterior and interior, expression and subtlety. Framed in a deep black shadowbox, this piece plays on symmetry while celebrating contrast.
